2012 is here! This is the 2012 Pound-For-Pound Boxers List, January edition. My 2012 Pound-for-Pound best fighters in boxing list is not to establish these fighters as the best of all time. My pound-for-pound perspective is based on skill level, level of competition and ring performance. For example, if you were to take all of those attributes combined and present them in the body of a bantamweight up to a super heavyweight body, how would the boxer fair using these combination of attributes in any given weight class? That’s my logic when I consider who is pound-for-pound best.
#1 Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr
WBC Welterweight Champion // Record: 42-0, 26 KOs
Age 34
Upside: Floyd Mayweather Jr’s skill level is other worldly. In the compubox era, he is boxing’s most dominating fighter. His (+/-) landed differentials is +30%, which is double the #2 listed Andre Ward who boasts a +14%. Floyd is landing 46% of his punches while holding his opponents to a meager 16% connect rate.
Downside: Sentenced to 90 days in jail beginning Jan. 6, 2012. Floyd’s chances of fighting Pacquiao seem grim given the obstacles placed between he and Pacquiao by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, and now, jail.
#2 Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao
WBO Welterweight Champion // Record: 53-3-2, 38 KOs
Age 33
Upside: PacMan can benefit from Mayweather’s prison sentence with more time to prep for a bout with Floyd.
Downside: His 3rd bout vs Marquez (#5 P4P) was the first great technical boxer Manny faced since he last faced Marquez in March of 2008. While he showed signs of improvement, his overall ability was clarified against a brilliant technical boxer like Marquez. General consensus is: “If Manny struggled with Juan, He can’t beat Floyd.” Manny has a lot to work on if he stands a chance to defeat Floyd.
#3 Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez
Middleweight champion
Record: 48-2-2, 25 KOs
Age: 36
Upside: Other than the fact that Manny has fought more “bigger names”, I can’t tell you why I have Martinez below him. Sergio is still knocking his opponents out. His latest victim was Dzinziruk, a very good technical boxer who undefeated. He KO’d him with versatility, speed, and power.
Downside: Although he has been clearly facing tougher opponents than Manny, small followings don’t get you into the ring with big names.
#4 Andre “Son Of God” Ward
Unified Super Middleweight Champion
Age: 27
Record: 25-0-0, 13 KOs
Upside: Dominating the Showtime Super Six Tournament, Ward made the boxing world realize he is pound for pound greatness. His skills are fantastic: Inside and outside fighting, superb defense, great footwork, ring generalship. His (+/-) is +14%, 2nd only to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Downside: None for the foreseeable future. 2012 will be full of opponents The S.O.G. can take on.
#5 Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez
Lineal World Lightweight Champion
Age: 38
Record: 53-6-1, 39 KOs
Upside: Marquez put on another great performance against Pacquiao in their 3rd bout. Juan showed the world the difference in level of competition Manny has faced since facing him last in March 2008. Though losing controversially, Juan has plenty of options to choose from in 2012.
Downside: He’s stuck fighting Manny again. Though it will be a profitable fight, Marquez should move on after facing Manny a 4th time.
#6 Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins
WBC Light Heavyweight Champion
Record: 52-5-2, 32 KOs
Age: 46
Upside: Hopkins was awarded his title back after a bizarre fiasco in the ring against Chad Dawson.
Downside: Time is running out on Bernard Hopkins. The way the fight ended against Dawson left a bad taste in many boxing fan and critics mouth. His hard work to make history is seemingly being overshadowed by what is perceived as flopping antics.
#7 Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire
Bantamweight Titlist
Record: 27-1-0, 18 KOs
Age: 28
Upside: Donaire cruised to a unanimous victory over Narvaez the last time we saw him. He looked fast, and explosive.
Downside: Omar Narvaez’s defensive style exposed Donaire’s inability to adjust on the fly and add variety to his punches to open up his opponent. What happens when Nonito faces a truly dynamic opponent?
#8 Timothy Bradley
WBO & WBC Jr Welterweight Title Holder
Age: 27
Record: 28-0, 11 KOs
Upside: Fresh off a dominating victory of aging journeyman Joel Casamayor, Bradley is seeking to make a splash in 2012 with his new contract with Top Rank Boxing.
Downside: Signing with Top Rank boxing may be his biggest downfall as promoter Bob Arum will attempt to use Bradley as a sacrificial lamb to his price catch, Pacquiao. Bradley’s up for the challenge because he’s a competitor at heart.
#9 Wladamir Klitschko
Lineal World Heavyweight Champion
Age: 35
Record: 56-3, 49 KOs
Upside: Wladamir is flat out good. Emmanuel Steward has honed his skills well. After dominating David Haye, Hay retired. Nuff said.
Downside: The Klitschko brothers must fight in order to restore relevance to the Heavyweight division. Their vow to never face each other is the sole reason the heavyweight division is not as interesting as it used to be.
#10 Pongsaklek Wonjongkam
Lineal World Flyweight Champion
Age: 34
Record: 83-3-1, 45 KO
Upside: Experience. 86 fights says it all. He has fought to reclaim his title. A win over Kameda gave new attention to Pongsaklek and he has earned his position as the cream of the Flyweight crop:
Downside: Age and wear and tear may be creeping up on him. This is the downside to 80+ professional fights.
Prediction: Adrien “The Problem” Broner
#10 soon!
WBO Super Featherweight Champion
Age 22
Record: 22-0-0, 18 KOs
Upside: I’m calling my shot early. Adrien Broner is a budding brilliant technical boxer with better skills who reminds of Floyd in so many ways and he’s a better boxer than Nonito Donaire. Better defense, Better offense.
Downside: Level of competition is not really in question as he’s on a rise. HIs next 3 opponents will be the determining factor.
